Older Americans Month is observed nationally each May to celebrate the accomplishments of our older citizens and to express our gratitude for the contributions they have made, and continue to make, to our communities.
The Ohio Department of Aging promotes Older Americans Month and supports local organizations that host activities. The state theme for Older Americans Month 2008 is "Loving Life, Helping Others, Supporting Communities."
Communities are like families in that their strength lies in the beneficial interactions of their members. Just as seniors are the foundations of their families, they also can be the cornerstones of their communities, serving as leaders, mentors and role models.
Seniors support community infrastructures through volunteering, caregiving and other activities. Additionally, seniors are integral to a strong economy and can be valuable assets to employers through re-careering, re-entering the market, getting job training and more.
FOR ALL OF THESE REASONS, I, TED STRICKLAND, Governor of the State of Ohio, do hereby proclaim May, 2008 as OLDER AMERICANS MONTH.
I urge all Ohioans and communities to celebrate the many ways older Ohioans can live full and satisfying lives and contribute to making the state a better place through caregiving, volunteerism, employment and family and community leadership.
Ted Strickland
